Political canvassing may sound intimidating, yet Ann Groves-Lloyd, 1st Vice Chair of the Democratic Party of Columbia County describes it in simpler terms: “It really is just storytelling and having a conversation.”

Canvassers knock on doors, but their job is not to argue with people or pressure them into supporting specific candidates. They introduce the Democratic Party and its values, listen to the concerns of the person who answers, and sometimes share a personal story. The goal is connection—learning what matters to a neighbor and “planting seeds” that may shape how that person thinks about the election.

Groves-Lloyd places these conversations “right at the very top” among ways to reach voters. Advertising, postcards, phone calls, and outreach within personal networks all matter, but a face-to-face exchange can build an emotional connection. Later in the campaign, the focus shifts to getting out the vote and reminding supporters to cast their ballots.

There is a role for nearly everyone:

·         Knock doors with a partner.

·         Drive canvassers through rural areas, where travel between homes takes time.

·         Write postcards, make phone calls, or talk with people in your own network.

New volunteers will not be sent out unprepared. The organization offers training, reviews safety and door-knocking reminders, and will pair first-time volunteers with experienced canvassers. Weekend dates are available while weekday arrangements can also be made. Volunteers may even request to work in their own neighborhoods.

Drivers are especially important. Groves-Lloyd recalls how valuable a driver was during her 2018 Assembly campaign—not only for transportation, but also for encouragement and support.

Ready to help? Visit the organization’s website, complete the canvassing form, and indicate the days and role that work for you. Challenge yourself, step beyond your comfort zone, and join a passionate local team working to make change.

As Groves-Lloyd says, “Every call, every door knocked, every person you talk with will make a difference.”
