Meet our new WisDems Field Organizer Sam Clark.
The Democratic Party of Columbia County is excited to welcome Sam Clark, our new WisDems field organizer who is helping to build volunteer energy across Columbia County and neighboring communities.
Sam comes to this work from Madison, after previously living in New York. He says the decision to get involved came after realizing that a corporate job was not where he wanted to put his energy.
“After the primary, I was like, I gotta get involved,” Sam says. Now, only a couple of weeks into the work, he is already making calls, recruiting volunteers, and showing up wherever help is needed.
For Sam, field organizing is about much more than phone calls. It means knocking doors, supporting canvasses, setting up opportunities for members to meet the public, such as at farmers’ markets and helping with fairs and other events. Making sure volunteers have a clear path to get involved and take action is critical to his role as a field organizer.
“It’s great talking to people,” he says, noting that even when a call or conversation does not immediately produce a volunteer, it can still become a meaningful exchange about the state of Wisconsin politics.
Sam’s work with the CoCo Dems will focus on the essentials of grassroots organizing:
Recruiting volunteers for canvassing and events;
Helping organize voter outreach and get-out-the-vote efforts;
Encouraging relational organizing—talking with friends, family, and neighbors about why voting matters;
Connecting interested Democrats with tools like Reach so more people can get involved.
That personal connection is especially important to Sam as he puts into action what relational organizing is all about. One of the most powerful things volunteers can do, he says, is share in their own words who they are voting for and why. Those conversations help persuade undecided voters and remind Democrats to turn out while building the relationships that make local organizing strong.
Sam plans to be at the CoCo Dems office Tuesday through Friday, generally from Noon to 9 PM, with the office door typically open until around 5 PM. Anyone interested in canvassing, volunteering, or learning how to help should stop by, reach out, and invite friends to do the same.
